CBTRUS Statistical Report:

Primary Brain and Central Nervous System Tumors Diagnosed in the United States in 2019-2023

This report was prepared by the CBTRUS Co-Scientific Principal Investigator, Quinn T. Ostrom, Ph.D., M.P.H. and her research team from Duke University School of Medicine in collaboration with the CBTRUS Team, Research and Policy Coordinator Mackenzie Price, M.P.H., CBTRUS President and Chief Mission Officer Carol Kruchko, and CBTRUS interns Angela Bartolo, Deem Alifosan, and Hillary Hsu.

The CBTRUS data presented in this report were provided through an agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR). In addition, CBTRUS used data from the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. CBTRUS acknowledges and appreciates these contributions to this report and to cancer surveillance in general and in particular to the efforts of the oncology data specialists, the central cancer registries, and the staff from the NPCR and SEER programs whose efforts to collect accurate and complete data have made this report possible.

We are also grateful for our Consulting Neuropathologists who answered our questions and provided feedback throughout the year, to our Board of Directors and Advisors, and especially Eric B. Durbin, Dr.P.H., M.S., Roberta McKean-Cowdin, Ph.D., Fernanda Michels, Ph.D., Denise Duran, M.P.H., Reda Wilson, M.P.H., and Mary Elizabeth O’Neil, M.P.H., who reviewed this report.

Sources of geographic population-based cancer incidence data for 2019-2023 included in this report are from the following 52 central cancer registries (CCRs):

Alabama HawaiiSEER Michigan North Carolina Texas
Alaska Idaho Minnesota North Dakota Utah
Arizona Illinois Mississippi Ohio Vermont
Arkansas Indiana Missouri Oklahoma Virginia

(SEER) Data were obtained from the SEER research data files for these population-based cancer registries for incidence calculations. All other population-based cancer registry data provided by the NPCR, which may include registries for which data are also available through SEER.

Sources of geographic population-based cancer survival data for 2018-2022 with follow-up through 2023 included in this report are from 21 CCRs of the SEER 21 program:

Alaska* Hawaii Kentucky* New York*
California* Idaho* Louisiana* Seattle-Puget Sound*
Connecticut Iowa New Mexico Texas*
Georgia* Illinois* New Jersey* Utah*

*Data were obtained from the NCI’s SEER research data files for these population-based cancer registries for survival calculations, but the cancer registry also transmit to the CDC’s NPCR.

In addition, CBTRUS used data from the research data files of the NCI’s SEER Program and the National Center for Health Statistics National Vital Statistics System.
